When travelling to Sri Lanka, it's important to understand the local electrical standards to keep your devices powered and well-protected. This guide covers the key details about the voltage, plug types, and the adapters you'll need.

Voltage and Frequency

Sri Lanka operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency. This is compatible with most devices from countries using similar standards. However, if you’re coming from a country that uses 110V (like the United States or Canada), you may need a voltage converter to avoid damaging your electronics.

Many modern devices, like smartphones and laptops, have built-in convertors, but double-check to avoid any mishaps.

Plug Types in Sri Lanka

We have three types of plugs in Sri Lanka:

  • Type D
This plug has three round pins in a triangular pattern.

  • Type G
Commonly known as the British plug, it has three rectangular prongs.

  • Type M
Similar to Type D but with larger pins. This is less common and typically used for larger appliances.

We recommend checking your devices and plugs beforehand to see if they're compatible with these types. If not, we suggest carrying a universal travel adapter or several if you would like to charge several devices together.
