  • Shredded Coconut: Fresh shredded coconut is essential for the authentic flavor and texture of pol sambol.
  • Red Chili Flakes: The chili flakes bring the heat 🔥. Adjust the amount based on your preference.
  • Diced Onions: The onions give the pol sambol texture. You could also omit this and add water to turn the relish into a paste.
  • Lemon: The lemon gives the pol sambol a tangy kick. Adjust for acidity.

Tips For Making Pol Sambol

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: For the best flavors, use fresh shredded coconut, onions, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. The difference in taste is night and day!
  • Grind Your IngredientsIf you have time, grinding your ingredients can help break them down and release some of their flavors. It'll also help you achieve a smoother consistency. A grinder or pestle and mortar can be used to grind the mixture.
  • Wear Hand Protection: If you're mixing the ingredients by hand, consider wearing a hand glove! This will help you guard your eyes and skin from the chili flakes. We've definitely learned this the hard way.

Troubleshooting Your Pol Sambol Recipe

Why is my Pol Sambol dry?

If your pol sambol is too dry, add a small amount of water or more lemon juice.

The color of my Pol Sambol is not vibrant. What might be wrong?

If the color of your pol sambol is not vibrant, it might be due to the chili flakes or over mixing. Ensure you're using fresh ingredients as they tend to produce a brighter and more appealing mixture.

Storing Leftover Pol Sambol and Meal Prep

To store leftover pol sambol, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate. Make sure the container is clean to avoid any contamination. Refrigerating the pol sambol should help it last for a few days.

While pol sambol is typically served cold or at room temperature, you can gently reheat it if needed before serving. Give it a good mix as well before serving!
